Celebrate With Your Classmates and Professors

Below is a list of departments and programs that are planning celebrations for their graduates. More information will be added as these events are planned. All times listed are Central Daylight Time (CDT). Contact your department or program for further details.  

African & African-American Studies

A special departmental celebration package was sent to all graduates. A page on our website will go live on May 15 at 12:30 pm to celebrate our graduates, and will include a special video highlighting faculty and graduating majors. 


May 13, 4 p.m. 
Join the department on their YouTube channel for a virtual anthropology commencement ceremony, including remarks from faculty, department awards, and a toast to graduates.

Art History and Archaeology

May 14, 3 p.m. 
A "virtual tea," where the graduating seniors will be recognized and the departmental prizes will be awarded. 


May 13, 3:30 p.m.
An undergraduate honors and research emphasis ceremony. This recognition and award ceremony will highlight the achievements of graduating Biology majors who have completed theses based on independent research. All Biology majors and their families are welcome to attend. The event program can be found here. All Biology graduates are invited to join. The event will be streamed live on the Biology Department Facebook page.


May 13, 3 p.m.

A department hooding ceremony for graduate students. 

Classics and Ancient Studies

May 15, 2:30 PM
A departmental celebration of all graduates in Classics and Ancient Studies. Graduates should receive a Zoom invitation from Amelia Goldsby (; contact her with any questions). Others can watch the event live or recorded here.

Comparative Literature

The program is creating and mailing a special celebration box with congratulations for the graduates.

Earth and Planetary Sciences

April 23, 4 p.m. 
The department will host an event to showcase senior theses presentations and a department award celebration. 

East Asian Languages and Cultures

A video with messages to the graduating seniors will be circulated from the department.


May 15, 1pm
The department will host a virtual reception on Zoom with faculty. Majors and minors will receive an email from Dottie Petersen by May 12 with further details and Zoom information. The department also created this video to share with graduates.


May 14, 6 p.m.
The department will hold a Graduate Recognition Celebration on Zoom. They will celebrate graduates, and present the departmental academic and leadership awards.

English and Writing

May 12, 11:00 a.m.
The department will host a celebration of undergraduate students.

Environmental Studies

The program recognized five seniors for outstanding work in environmental studies. Read more about the awardees.

Germanic Languages and Literatures

Mailing a special departmental celebration box, as well as profiles of seniors on the department's social media pages.


The department produced a video message highlighting faculty and graduating majors; follow their Facebook account for more information.

Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities

May 15, 1pm
The department will host online recognition ceremony. 

International and Area Studies

A video from the department was circulated to majors on Thursday, May 14. A digital copy of the graduate reception program listing all special honors and awards is available here.

Jewish, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, JIMES)

Students should check their email for a congratulatory email from the chair. Departmental Awards will be announced on their website.

John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics

A special graduation package was mailed to all graduating minors, there will also be social media shout-outs, and announcement on the Center's website.

Latin American Studies

May 15, 5 p.m.
There will be a department recognition ceremony via Zoom. Contact Dr. Prado for more information.

Mathematics and Statistics

May 15, 12:45 pm
The department will hold a graduate student recognition event on Friday, May 15, at 12:45 pm. Details will be sent to graduating Math graduate students by Prof Brett Wick. If you'd like more information, please reach out to

May 15, 1-2 pm
The department will hold a reception for graduating seniors via Zoom rooms on Friday, May 15, from 1 to 2 pm. All graduating Math majors will receive an email from Blake Thornton by May 8 with details and Zoom information. The department will celebrate their seniors through “musical postcards” and senior profiles on their website. These profiles will continue to be added through May 15.  The department is also mailing a celebration card to graduating senior music majors.

Religious Studies

The program will celebrate their seniors through recognition on their website and circulating a video message from the director.

May 15, 2 p.m. 
Majors and minors are welcome to join the department for a virtual graduation to recognize their accomplishments and join in a Post-Ceremony Toast, with a special surprise guest speaker! Students and guests must RSVP to in advance of the ceremony to receive the Zoom meeting invitation link. The event will be recorded and posted for those who will not be able to join us synchronously.

A video recognition ceremony will be posted on the University College website.
